How we score

The formulas below match the official notifications. We cite sources in plain text — no outbound links — so your practice session is never interrupted.

Standard method used across TypeForExam: Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = Gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy = correct characters ÷ total characters × 100. A "word" is defined as 5 keystrokes including spaces, which is the standard used by SSC, CPCT, and most Indian government recruiters. Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most from aspirants. Longer answers are in the blog.

Is TypeForExam really free?
Yes — every typing test, every tool, every blog post is 100% free. No sign-up, no paywall, no subscription. The site is ad-supported, which is how we keep the lights on without charging aspirants who are already paying for coaching.
Which government typing exams are covered?
60+ exams across 7 countries. India: SSC CGL, CHSL, Stenographer, CPCT, RRB NTPC, Delhi HC JJA, Court Clerk, UP/MP/Rajasthan/Bihar state LDC and more. Nepal: Lok Sewa Section Officer, Nayab Subba, Kharidar. Bangladesh: BPSC Office Assistant, Data Entry, Computer Operator. USA, Canada, Australia, UK: federal clerical and stenographer tests.
Does TypeForExam support Hindi typing?
Yes. We support both Kruti Dev (for SSC, CPCT, Court Clerk, Stenographer) and Mangal / Unicode Inscript (for High Court, Railway, and most 2023+ exams). We also support Devanagari input for Nepal Lok Sewa tests. If you are unsure which font your exam uses, see our Kruti Dev vs Mangal guide.
Are the scoring formulas accurate to the real exam?
Yes. Every typing test on TypeForExam uses the scoring formula specified in the official exam notification. See the "How We Score" table above for the formula and source used for each exam.
Is backspace allowed during the test?
It depends on the exam. SSC (2022 rules onwards) allows backspace; SSC Stenographer Grade C/D does not allow it during the dictation transcription stage. We default to whatever the exam's official rule is, and show a toggle for practice mode if you want to drill both scenarios. Read the full breakdown for every exam.
Do you save my results?
Results are saved locally on your device (in your browser's storage). We do not upload them to our servers, and we do not require you to sign up. If you clear your browser storage, your history is gone — but you can download your typing certificate at the end of each session for keeps.

Who runs TypeForExam

Somewhere right now, a student is practicing at 2 AM for an exam that could change three generations of her family. Somewhere else, a boy is re-starting his timer for the seventh time tonight because this year he has decided not to settle. We know these moments. We have lived close to them. Some of us were them.

TypeForExam is built, maintained and kept free by a small team that still remembers what it feels like to want a government posting more than anything else — and to have only a borrowed keyboard, a slow connection, and a two-hour window of power before the house goes quiet. Every passage we pick, every score we calculate, every line of code we write, we put ourselves back into that chair.

We will never charge you to sit in it with us. We will never ask you to sign up. We will never tell you your speed is not enough — only show it to you exactly as the real exam will. Because the keyboard should be fair: the same for the girl in Siliguri, the boy in Multan, the student in Kathmandu, the aspirant in Sylhet, and every one of you in between.

We are only here to make the keyboard fair. The rest of the story is yours to write.
