CPCT Typing Test — pick your language

The Computer Proficiency Certification Test (CPCT) is a Madhya Pradesh government skill test — clearing it once gives you a certificate valid for 2 years across multiple MP recruitments (LDC, Data Entry Operator, UDC). The typing section runs 15 minutes; you take it in English (30 WPM cutoff) or Hindi (20 WPM cutoff, in Remington Gail or Inscript layout). Pick your language, then practise.

Which one fits you

If you are still deciding at the application stage, run through this checklist before submitting. Once submitted, your choice cannot be changed.

The honest decision tree

CPCT is the only Indian government typing exam with a "Pick whichever Hindi layout you prefer" rule. Other exams force Mangal OR Krutidev based on the post. CPCT offers both. Use this to your advantage if you already know one — switching layouts costs weeks.

If you...
plan to apply for multiple MP government posts → aim for the higher score, not just the cutoff. CPCT validity is 2 years and many MP recruitments use the same certificate. A higher CPCT score helps tie-breakers for downstream selections.
If you...
already type Hindi in Mangal/Inscript → pick Hindi Mangal. Same cutoff as Krutidev (20 WPM) but the skill is more transferable to other government exams.
If you...
have prior coaching-centre training on Krutidev → pick Krutidev. Same cutoff, your muscle memory matches.
If you...
are starting from zero typing skill and have 6+ weeks → pick English. Lower learning curve and the skill transfers to every other government exam you might attempt later.
If you...
are taking CPCT only to qualify for a Hindi-medium post → pick Hindi Mangal. The application form will state which Hindi medium is preferred by the recruiting authority.

Rules that apply across all formats

The language changes the keyboard layout and the cutoff. Everything below stays consistent across versions.

15 minutes typing test

CPCT consists of two parts. Part A (75 minutes, multiple-choice computer proficiency) and Part B (15 minutes typing). Both must clear. Total CPCT exam is 120 minutes.

Backspace allowed

CPCT typing test allows backspace. But like all other government exams, every keystroke including corrections contributes to the Gross WPM calculation.

Net WPM with error penalty

Standard Net WPM scoring. 33 Gross WPM with 4 errors/minute = 29 Net WPM = clears the 30 WPM cutoff (round up if just barely).

M

50% in Part A required too

Part A (computer proficiency MCQ) requires 50% — that is 37.5/75 marks. Cannot pass CPCT by clearing typing alone. Both sections are mandatory.

Certificate validity 2 years

CPCT certificate is valid for 2 years. Use the same certificate for multiple MP recruitments — LDC, DEO, UDC, Stenographer, Patwari, and several departmental clerical posts.

💯

Higher scores matter

Some MP recruitments use CPCT score (not just pass/fail) as a tie-breaker in final merit. Higher WPM = better tie-breaker position. Aim 5+ WPM above cutoff.

What this typing test actually feels like

CPCT is genuinely useful in a way other typing exams are not. You clear it once, get a certificate valid 2 years, and apply for multiple MP government posts using the same certificate. For aspirants planning a career in MP state government, CPCT is the highest-ROI typing exam — one prep cycle covers years of recruitments.

About the language choice: CPCT is unusual in offering both Krutidev (Remington Gail) and Mangal (InScript) for the Hindi medium with identical cutoffs. Most other government exams force one or the other. This means if you already know one Hindi layout, you can pick it and skip the relearning cost. If you do not know either, pick Mangal InScript — it is the direction every other government exam is moving and the skill transfers cleanly.

The two-part structure (Part A computer proficiency + Part B typing) catches aspirants who focus only on typing. Part A is multiple-choice on basic computer skills — OS basics, internet, common software, fundamentals. It is not hard but does require some preparation. Plan a week of Part A revision in addition to typing practice.

A practical tip on the 15-minute duration: it is long enough to lose rhythm. Many candidates type at 32 WPM for 8 minutes, then drop to 22 WPM in minutes 10-15. Practise full 15-minute sessions for at least the final 3 weeks before your exam date. Short sprints do not transfer.

What is CPCT and who needs it?

CPCT (Computer Proficiency Certification Test) is conducted by Madhya Pradesh government for clerical recruitment screening. LDC, Data Entry Operator, UDC, Stenographer, Patwari, and several other state-government clerical posts require a valid CPCT certificate. The certificate is valid for 2 years across multiple recruitments.

What is the typing speed cutoff for CPCT?

English: 30 WPM Net. Hindi (either Mangal InScript or Krutidev Remington Gail): 20 WPM Net. Test runs 15 minutes. Both cutoffs are equivalents in WPM terms — the Hindi cutoff is lower because Hindi typing per keystroke is structurally slower.

Should I pick Hindi Mangal or Hindi Krutidev for CPCT?

CPCT is one of the few exams that lets you pick either. The cutoff is identical (20 WPM). Practical answer: pick whichever you already know better. If you know neither, pick Mangal InScript — the skill transfers to most other government exams (SSC CHSL, DSSSB, KVS) which use Mangal by default.

Is CPCT valid only in Madhya Pradesh?

Yes, CPCT certification is for MP government recruitments. Other states have their own equivalents (e.g., RPSC for Rajasthan, UPSSSC for UP). The skill (typing speed at the cutoff) is transferable; the certificate itself is MP-specific.

What is the validity of the CPCT score?

2 years from the date of result. Same certificate accepted across multiple MP government recruitments in that window. Plan your recruitment applications within this validity to maximise the value of a single CPCT prep cycle.

Is Part A or Part B harder in CPCT?

Most candidates find Part A (computer proficiency MCQ) easier than Part B (typing). Part A is straightforward conceptual questions about computers and basic productivity software. Part B is the typing test where most failures happen — the 30 WPM English / 20 WPM Hindi cutoff is achievable but not automatic.

How many times can I take CPCT?

CPCT runs at multiple dates throughout the year. A candidate can attempt as many times as they want. There is no limit. Each attempt has its own application fee. Many candidates take it 2-3 times before clearing.

Does CPCT score matter beyond pass/fail?

For most MP recruitments, CPCT is qualifying — pass or fail. But for some senior clerical positions, a higher CPCT score is used as a tie-breaker in final merit. Aim 5+ WPM above the cutoff for safety and for better tie-breaker positioning.
